Frequently Asked Questions
FAQ for students new to Westview Theater Company
Q: Do I have to be in a theater class to be in the company?
A: No, anyone interested in theater can join the company.
Q: How can I do theater if I also want to play a sport?
A: For tech, we will take all the hands we can get any time you are available to help! It may just be a bit more difficult with acting depending on the size of a role you receive. But we will look at your schedule, and try to work out the best way to get you into the show, because we want everyone to be involved one way or another whether that is tech or acting!
Q: How do I sign up for the company?
A: Follow the steps on the paper you got from WVTC at freshman registration, or come into the theater during school and we will help you get set up!
Q: When are the shows this year and what are they?
A: This school year WVTC will be putting on The Wizard of Oz as our fall musical and Little Women as our spring play. There will also be two showcases, one at the beginning and one at the end of the school year, where students can perform in our theatre, and a One Acts festival in the middle of the year.
Q: When are rehearsals for the productions and how long are they?
A: Rehearsals for the productions typically take place Monday-Thursday, and they are usually 4:00 PM - 7:30 or 8:00 PM. However, depending on the size of the role you are playing, your call times may vary and you won’t be called every day. The last week and a half before opening night usually has a more rigorous rehearsal schedule, called "tech week", where the whole cast and necessary crew are called from 4:00 PM - 9:00 PM for dress rehearsals and tech runs.
Q: How often does the company meet and what happens in the meetings?
A: the company meets at lunch about once a month. These meetings are mainly to update the company on upcoming events. We also usually try to end meetings with something fun, such as a game of “name that tune” with musicals!
Q: I have been told that the entire company is on slack. What is Slack and how do I use it?
A: Slack is a business messaging platform. When you register for WVTC, you will be directed to download and sign up for a Slack account, and from there you will be added into the WVTC Slack server. All important messages concerning the company as a whole will be sent into the #general channel, while smaller channels will additionally be created for things like individual crews.
Q: What do I do if I don’t have a phone to get slack with?
A: Have your parents or guardians sign up for you so you can receive all updates, and info about the upcoming shows/events for the company. You can also download it onto a computer or similar device.
Q: What does “tech” mean? What are the different roles that you can do?
A: A technician is anyone who works behind the scenes and “techs” for one of our productions. We have seven crews: set, props, costumes, hair/makeup, sound, lights, and projections. Each of these crews is fully composed of students, including the designers and crew heads.
Q: Can freshmen audition for the productions and can they be in tech?
A: Yes! Freshmen are highly encouraged to audition for shows and join any of our tech crews.
Q: What do I have to do for auditions? What do I need and how do I sign up?
A: For a musical audition, you must have a 32 bar (about one minute) cut of a song prepared. You should also prepare sheet music of your song if possible, as a live accompanist might be the one playing at the audition. For a play audition, prepare a short monologue, also in the style of the show. Audition sign ups will be posted in Slack a week or so before the day, so pick a slot that works for you and be at the choir room or black box about 15 mins before your audition.
Q: What are Bound For Broadway and Encore?
A: Bound for Broadway and Encore! are our "start-of-year" and "end-of-year" showcases, where actors take the stage in a series of individual acts. People sing, act, and dance. Its a great opportunity to perform a piece from your favorite show/musical!
